Murder in El Salvador Calls Canadian Mining Interests Into Question

Canadian civil society organizations are calling for a full investigation
into the murder of Juan Francisco Durán Ayala, the fourth such death in
two years that local organizations believe are linked to the presence of
Vancouver-based Pacific Rim Mining in the department of Cabañas.
On June 2nd, Juan Francisco Durán Ayala, a thirty-year old linguistics
student at the Technological University in San Salvador, was hanging
posters in the city of Ilobasco, in the department of Cabañas as part of a
campaign against mining and Pacific Rim. The Cabañas Environmental
Committee reported that the local mayor ordered municipal police to remove

Three large energy companies have been carrying out covert intelligence-gathering operations on environmental activists, the Guardian can reveal.
The energy giant E.ON, Britain's second-biggest coal producer Scottish Resources Group and Scottish Power, one of the UK's largest electricity-generators, have been paying for the services of a private security firm that has been secretly monitoring activists.

Olympia, WA – On October 25, activists from Olympia Rising Tide hung two banners at the Evergreen State College in opposition to a proposed biomass gasification facility. Olympia Rising Tide opposes biomass because it is a false solution to climate change and would lead to a massive resurgence of clear-cut logging in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere.

now has approved an agreement to leave Ecuador's largest oil reserves,
amounting to some 900 million barrels, underground in Yasuni National
Park in exchange for more than $3 billion.
