Wall St. and the Anti-Immigration Campaign
Over the past 4 years over 1 million immigrants have been jailed in private prisons, paid for by the taxpayers. These prisons are run by two Wall St.-backed companies that promote the criminalization of immigrants--the Geo Group, which owns the NW Detention Center, and Corrections Corporation of America(CCA).
Both companies run prisons that abuse peoples safety and constitutional right. Geo recently agreed to pay restitution to prisoners who suffered physical abuse during strip-searches in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas and New Mexico.
Geo takes in $1.17 billion in yearly revenue, while CCA gets $1.69 billion, along with greatly increasing profits.
Before 2006, immigrants charged with misusing a social security number were not facing a serious offense. But since then, those facing this civil infraction are being charged with identity theft, a felony. This single change in enforcement created a "market" of 10 million new felons almost overnite, which multiplied the incarceration market for the private prison industry. Just after this, White House advisors publicly recommended buying stock in private prison companies like Geo and CCA.
Arizona governor, Jan Brewer, the main pusher of the racist, anti-worker SB 1070, received substantial campaign money from CCA executives. The most influential investor in CCA is a hedge fund, Pershing Square. Wells Fargo is the most powerful investor in Geo. The destructive economic interests behind the incarceration of immigrants are another reason to "occupy Wall St." and push back these anti-immigrant forces. (see workers.org and cipamericas.org)
We will bring coffee and food, support and solidarity to visiting families and loved ones at the detention center.
