Murder in El Salvador Calls Canadian Mining Interests Into Question
Submitted by rick on 21 June 2011 - 8:41pmYet another anti-mining activist has been murdered in El Salvador.
Canadian civil society organizations are calling for a full investigation
into the murder of Juan Francisco Durán Ayala, the fourth such death in
two years that local organizations believe are linked to the presence of
Vancouver-based Pacific Rim Mining in the department of Cabañas.
On June 2nd, Juan Francisco Durán Ayala, a thirty-year old linguistics
student at the Technological University in San Salvador, was hanging
posters in the city of Ilobasco, in the department of Cabañas as part of a
campaign against mining and Pacific Rim. The Cabañas Environmental

Bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia, 86, champion of indigenous, dies in Mexico
Submitted by rick on 26 January 2011 - 6:42pmNot enough could easily be said about the importance of Samuel Ruiz' legacy. From the time of the scorched earth campaigns in Guatemala when hundreds of thousands of Mayans fled into Chiapas, to the 1994 Zapatista uprising his efforts have been critical. He will be sorely missed. -Rick

Author, Journalist, Activist John Ross Dead at 72
Submitted by rick on 18 January 2011 - 1:53amMexico will not feel the same knowing I won't be running across John. If there was something remarkable going on in Mexico one was sure to run into John Ross there. For those who didn't know him it is hard to compare him to anyone. As much as I want to I won't try. He was like a category all his own. -Rick

Cuba Caravan
Submitted by Berd on 6 July 2010 - 4:46pm
I went to Fertile Ground last night and ate pizza with the Cuba Caravanistas. The pizza was good, and so was the discussion. Brendan Funtek spoke about Cuba and his travel and other involvement with the caravan. Then Manolo de los Santos, who is the Pastors for Peace representative (he's from New York via the Dominican Republic), also spoke. Finally, Rick Fellows spoke.

Family of Gaza protester killed by bulldozer putting Israel on trial
Submitted by rick on 4 March 2010 - 9:49pmI left the headline as KING 5 had it. I always disliked the mainstream press labelling Rachel "protester". USA Today had a photo of Rachel burning a mock flag at an earlier demonstration which they ran with their single column inch story at the time. Reduce it so people can feel they understand it and go on to the next story. -Rick

Green Economics: A Series of Community Gatherings on the Ongoing Economic Crisis
Submitted by Berd on 24 February 2010 - 3:10pm

We will host a series of community discussions, each one preceded by an informative meeting, on the causes of the economic crisis and a variety of proposals to deal with it. The 12-part series will occur on a variety of days
(both weeknights and weekend days) over a period of 9 weeks from approximately mid-February to late April. The topics will flow logically from one session to the next to create a comprehensive series, but each session will also stand alone so you can participate in those that suit your schedule.
