POSTVILLE, Iowa, (AFP) - Led by 43 women with electronic tracking bracelets on their ankles, hundreds of people from around the country marched down main street here Sunday to protest the biggest immigration raid in US history at a kosher meat plant that has split this tiny Iowa town asunder.

SANAA (AFP) — Five people, including a young boy, were wounded in southern Yemen on Tuesday when police fired on demonstrators demanding the release of more than 80 people arrested during previous protests, witnesses said.
Dozens of demonstrators were also detained during the new protest, in Radfan in southern Lahij province, the witnesses told AFP.
Police fired live bullets and tear gas to disperse the march, they said. read more »

EDINBURG, Texas, July 13, 2008 (UPI) -- Nearly 200 people gathered in Edinburg, Texas, to protest a proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexican border, activists say.
Activist Jay Johnson Castro said Saturday's protest by Rio Grande Valley residents was in opposition to the proposal aimed at halting the ongoing wave of illegal immigrants from Mexico, the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News said Sunday.
"Texas is the last stand against the border wall," Castro said.
"It's a shame. It's a criminal shame what has happened. It's a criminal regime that is doing this to this country," he added. read more »

SYDNEY (AFP) - Thirty-seven people were arrested at a climate change protest in Australia on Sunday when they blocked a railway line delivering coal, police said.
Organisers said as many as 1,000 people attended the protest march from Newcastle to the nearby Carrington coal terminal, where some demonstrators broke through a fence and chained themselves to a stationary coal train. read more »

KATMANDU, Nepal - Students attacked several government vehicles and blocked traffic in Nepal's capital Friday to protest sharp rises in fuel prices, bringing transportation in the city to a standstill.
The students also demanded a 50-percent discount on public transportation fares.
It was the second day of violent protests pressing the government to immediately withdraw fuel price increases and reverse a recent decision that let public transport fees jump by as much as 35 percent.
College students in Katmandu walked out of classes and blocked major streets in Katmandu on Friday. They erected roadblocks and threw rocks at government vehicles. read more »

NILIN, West Bank (AFP)--Hundreds of Palestinians, Israelis, and international activists gathered outside the occupied West Bank village of Nilin on Sunday to protest against the extension of Israel's separation wall.
At least three people were wounded by rubber bullets and another eight were treated for tear gas inhalation when Israeli troops dispersed the protest, the organisers said.
The villagers say they mobilized last month when the Israeli army told them it would confiscate some 2,500 dunams (620 acres) of land for the separation wall, which Israel insists is necessary to prevent attacks from the territory. read more »

On Saturday, police spokeswoman Ilona Tymlova said that an estimated 2 thousand people gathered in a Czech village to protest against the placing a US missile shield base in a nearby military zone, according to reports. The protesters then marched in rain from Misov, southwest of Prague, to the limits of the Brdy military zone in what was one of the largest protests against the US radar.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Landless workers blocked roads in southern Brazil to protest alleged violence by police who ousted activists from a tree farm run by a Swedish-Finnish paper maker, protesters said Wednesday.
Members of the Landless Workers Movement blocked eight roads in the Rio Grande do Sul state to call attention to Tuesday's police operation, which they say injured 50 activists of the farm workers' rights group Via Campesina.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.—Three people were arrested for trespassing during a demonstration by peace activists outside the main gate at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
Sunday's protest marked 25 years of demonstrations against Vandenberg's testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles. About 110 people gathered along Highway 1 outside the main gate to hear speeches and sing songs.
Air Force security officers handcuffed three demonstrators who crossed a green line marking military property. They are expected to face federal trespassing charges.

More than 200 students walked out of class Thursday afternoon to protest the removal of campus trees for a construction project.
