Athens: Supermarket target of Robin Hood raid

Self-styled anarchists claimed responsibility yesterday for raiding a supermarket in the Athens neighborhood of Nea Smyrni and then distributing the stolen goods to shoppers at a fruit and vegetable market in the fourth such incident during the last month. A group of some 20 people, all wearing hoods or helmets, entered the Marinopoulos supermarket on Evdoxou Street, loaded up trolleys with food and simply walked out of the store unchallenged.  read more »

South Africa: Protest by TB Patients

The authorities increased security at a tuberculosis hospital near the city of Port Elizabeth where patients with drug-resistant forms of the disease went on a rampage on Wednesday to protest prisonlike conditions. Twenty-two patients were arrested after they pelted the staff members with stones and vandalized equipment. But the local police station and prison refused to admit them, because of fears of the highly infectious disease. Instead, they were returned to the hospital. Patients with drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis are required to live in guarded and isolated quarters that are surrounded by barbed wire.

Nepal students attack government vehicles, block traffic to protest fuel price rise

KATMANDU, Nepal - Students attacked several government vehicles and blocked traffic in Nepal's capital Friday to protest sharp rises in fuel prices, bringing transportation in the city to a standstill.

The students also demanded a 50-percent discount on public transportation fares.

It was the second day of violent protests pressing the government to immediately withdraw fuel price increases and reverse a recent decision that let public transport fees jump by as much as 35 percent.

College students in Katmandu walked out of classes and blocked major streets in Katmandu on Friday. They erected roadblocks and threw rocks at government vehicles.  read more »

Homeless advocates protest at Seattle City Hall

Given that he was in a wheelchair, Mike Smith says Seattle police officers treated him "magnificently" Monday morning when they arrested him and 14 other homeless advocates who blocked Cherry Street near City Hall.

Thai PM orders crackdown on anti-govt protest

BANGKOK (AFP) - About 1,200 riot police assembled on Saturday in central Bangkok, waiting for an order from the Thai prime minister who has threatened to forcibly break up an extended anti-government protest.

At least 2,000 protesters defied the threat and continued to block a major avenue in the city's historic district, with some activists fashioning improvised shields and batons out of plywood boards and wooden rods.  read more »
