Sri Lanka journalists protest over attacks

COLOMBO (AFP) - Hundreds of Sri Lankan reporters and cameramen staged a protest outside President Mahinda Rajapakse's home Wednesday demanding an end to a wave of killings, abductions and assaults against journalists.

Media workers' associations peacefully demonstrated outside the main access to Rajapakse's Temple Trees residence while dozens of unarmed police stood behind yellow iron barricades.  read more »

South Koreans protest against US beef deal

SEOUL, South Korea - Thousands of protesters marched through Seoul against a U.S. beef import pact that has renewed fears of mad cow disease. Police said Tuesday that 30 demonstrators were arrested after scuffling erupted.

Thousands of workers protest in Croatia for higher wages

Sat, 12 Apr 2008 Earth Times Zagreb - Over 40,000 workers from all over Croatia took part in Zagreb Saturday in a mass protest calling for higher wages to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Despite very heavy rain and low temperatures, the demonstration - under the banner "together for higher wages" - turned out to be the biggest such event of its kind in over a decade, Croatian HRT television reported.

The peaceful demonstration cheered trade union leader Kresimir Sever's declaration that "Croatia is split - there are a few super- rich people, and countless poor."  read more »
