HONG KONG: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY STILL MEANS SOMETHING TO THESE WOMEN

Women workers took to the streets of Hong Kong for International Women's Day and directed their anger at both government of Hong Kong and Indonesian government. "We are women, we are workers!" The women complained about recruitment agencies that illegally overcharge women migrants.

Another group of women went after the sexism in the mass media. An example of what they were talking about concerned the outrageous sexist attacks and sexual harassment against well-known youth activist Christina Chan Hau-man by various gossip sheets and others.  read more »

State of Emergency Rally for Basic Health

As Governor Gregoire prepares to deliver her January 12th State of the State Address, students, community activists, the elderly and uninsured will hold a State of Emergency Rally for Basic Health at 11am on the steps of the Capitol Building. Protesters will deliver thousands of signatures on a petition calling for elected official to fully fund Basic Health and other vital human services by taxing the income of the wealthy and the profits of large corporations.  read more »

of them entry into the Palestinian territory.

The signs up all over the airport and various places elsewhere in town
are calling it Hopenhagen, but everybody I know is calling it
Cop-enhagen, which seems far more appropriate. The international media
has been giving this lots of coverage, and rightly so. Of course much
of the media is unable to walk and chew gum at the same time, so other
things, such as the reason the protests are happening in the first
place, can get lost.

Inside the Bella Center lots of stuff is going on. Namely the US,
Australia and others leading the way in making sure nothing meaningful

The Northwest Detention Center is guilty of violating the human and constitutional rights of
its 1000 detainees.  Recent studies have brought this out.  The prison is run by a private for-profit
operator named Geo.  Geo profits from our taxes and from the suffering
of immigrant workers in detention.  Geo owns prisons all over the
country.
