Direct Action

Direct action is a form of political activism which seeks immediate remedy for perceived ills, as opposed to indirect actions such as electing representatives who promise to provide remedy at some later date.

Journalist attacked by police while documenting Occupy Wall Street protests

Journalist Luke Rudkowski was attacked by police Wednesday night while trying to document the Occupy Wall Street arrests in NY. NYPD used pepper spray, batons, and brute force to move protesters away from the entrance to Wall Street after many tried to push through police barricades. Rumors immediately circulated that police provocateurs dressed as protesters were to blame for the incident.

Environmental activist Tim DeChristopher is surrounded by supporters carrying sings bearing the number 70, DeChristopher's bidder's number during a 2008 lease auction, outside the Frank E. Moss Federal Courthouse in Salt Lake City, February 28, 2011. DeChristopher, charged with fraudulently buying federal oil and gas leases at an auction here in 2008, took the witness stand at his criminal trial on Wednesday and told the jury he had acted spontaneously, with no clear plan or intent to harm. When a group of Washington state peace activists discovered that one of their fellow organizers was in fact a military informant, they decided to take their case to the courts. The activists, part of the Port Militarization Resistance movement that attempted to stop military shipments from operating out of the state's public ports in Olympia and Tacoma, uncovered the informant after he had infiltrated their group for over two years. Many considered the informant to be a close friend.

Boycott! A strategy for winning...

This year the Democrats are going to lose but dissident voices can win. We have a new and powerful excuse to boycott the elections, fighting corporate
power, but it has to be organized and an empowered boycott. This is a call against apathy, against the corporate political parties and for an empowered non-voter.

Organizing for America and the “Enthusiasm Gap”

The 2010 Senate elections are barely a month away, and Democrats across the country are getting worried.

In a new poll released last month by Public Policy Polling, Quantifying the Enthusiasm Gap, pollsters have found that in 10 key Senate and gubernatorial races across the country, Republicans are leading by wider margins.

Although the country is more or less split in half between Republican and Democratic party supporters when all eligible voters are asked (about 43% for both, according to the latest NBC/WSJ poll), when likely voters are polled, the Republicans take a substantial lead by roughly 9 points.
