Submitted by rick on 17 December 2010 - 3:25amStory by Bruce A. Dixon, audio interview by Glen Ford
The historic strike of Georgia prisoners, demanding wages for their labor, educational opportunities, adequate health care and nutrition, and better conditions is entering a new phase. Strikers [4] remain firm in their demands for full human rights, though after several days many have emerged from their cells, if only to take hot showers and hot food. Many of these, however, are still refusing their involuntary and unpaid work assignments.
Agreement to End Honduran Coup Marks Victory and Challenge
Submitted by rick on 30 October 2009 - 6:19pmOct 30, 2009
Last night, Oct. 29, Honduras' de facto regime finally agreed to allow
Congress to vote to "restore full executive power prior to June 28".
Conceding to international and national pressure, the Honduran coup
appears to be facing its final days.
June
28 was the date when the Armed Forces kidnapped the elected president,
Manuel Zelaya, and forcibly exiled him to Costa Rica. If the agreement
brokered this week holds, the Honduran resistance movement will have
turned the ugly precedent of a modern-day military coup d'etat into an

Union leaders on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe have agreed to end a 44-day-old general strike after most of their demands were met.
The announcement came after the LKP collective signed a deal with officials and business owners to raise workers' pay and lower the cost of basic goods. Negotiations are continuing in nearby Martinique over a similar stoppage.

BASSE-TERRE, Guadeloupe (AP)– The French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe was on the verge of rebellion, a political leader said Tuesday after stone-throwing protesters set cars and buildings ablaze, forced the international airport to close and clashed with police.
Nearly four weeks of work stoppages and demonstrations for lower prices and higher pay have caused thousands of tourists to flee or cancel holidays on the normally tranquil island, prompting many hotels to close and cruise ships to head elsewhere.

CAIRO The center of this normally bustling, overcrowded, traffic-clogged city was largely quiet Sunday, the roads nearly empty, many of the stores shuttered, as the riot police came out in force to prevent a general strike aimed at signaling widespread discontent with President Hosni Mubarak and his government.
Egypt has virtually no organized political opposition, except the Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned and barred from politics.
Iraqi Women Quietly Endure Horrors of War
Submitted by Anonymous on 8 March 2008 - 9:57amBy Cyril Mychalejko
March 8 marks the 99th celebration of International Women's Day, a day to commemorate the political, social, and economic struggles and achievements of women globally.
This year we should use the holiday to observe and reflect on the suffering of Iraqi women, who have become invisible "collateral damage" in our country's war in this now defenseless Middle Eastern nation. A good place to start would be by picking up and reading Haifa Zangana's book, "City of Windows: An Iraqi Woman's Account of War and Resistance." Zangana is an Iraqi woman, journalist and activist, who was also a former prisoner of Saddam Hussein's regime. She dedicated her book to A'beer Quassim Hamza al-Janaby.

This is a great documentary about the events in Oaxaca Mexico in the summer of 2006. It focuses on the role of community radio in coordinating the mobilizations of the people. In doing so it also gives a flavor of the spirit of the people in this largely indigenous region of Mexico. THIS IS A FREE EVENT! We think people should see it if they haven't.
