Freeschool Critical Relocation Fundraiser Event
The Freeschool Community is presenting a critical fund-raising benefit
beginning at 7 pm on Thursday evening, November 13th, 2008 at Media
Island, 816 Adams Street, Olympia, WA 98501. Donations are appreciated
but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Artists, Musicians and more Binclude (but are not limited to)
sunny (australia/ SF); chane (portland) - dance; francesca (portland) -
spoken word; jason (olympia); johnny (seattle) - music. Headline
performance by SUNNY Drake <<hUMAN cRITTER>>. Sunny Drake (from
Australia) embeds intimate & exposing autobiographical stories in
broader political contexts… <<cREATING>> tender, funny, brave,
meticulously-crafted and intelligent multi-genre performance and
workshops. A gateway into personal and political transformation and
anti-oppression work … <<wEAVING>> non-linear story-lines seamlessly
shifting between creative (and frequently absurd) political theatre,
personal story-telling and embodied movement with multi-media layers of
sound, video & projections… <<eXPLORING>> the icky-sticky-guts of:
gender, white privilege/ racism, sexuality, body image, sexual assault,
confessions, romance & what to do with the big questions, with a
particular emphasis on intersections. Sunny toured a one-person
multi-media gender-euphoric show, 'Other-wise', across Canada & the
USA.
Sunny was born, grown and has travelled to Olympia from stolen
Indigenous land in Australia (Jaggera-Turrabul land, Brisbane). We
thank all the bands from around the world for their solidarity.
Special thanks to Media Island for allowing us to use their space for the show.
Please join us for a special night of visual arts, spoken word and music from
around the world. A percentage of the Funds will support the
Freeschool Community and the performing artists and their travel expenses. Funds
are needed by the Freeschool now more than ever because after two years
of receiving generous and appreciated funding from the Olympia Food
Co-op, the Freeschool has chosen to find independent methods of raising
funds (which has cut our monthly budget by over 65%) in order to focus
more of our extremely limited volunteer hours and energy on diversity,
multicultural community outreach and free class co-ordination in a
non-institutional setting (that is our new location in a house in a
residential neighborhood rather than a culturally, alienating retail
office space).
