How peace activists saved the world: Professor Lawrence Wittner @ Timberland Library
Prof. Lawrence Wittner
is the
historian of the antinuclear movement. His book Confronting the Bomb
recalls nearly-forgotten successes during the Cold War and since.
He reminds us all of the power of creative, nonviolent action and helps
us
stay optimistic and effective. We're bringing him on a five-day tour
through WA,
ID and OR to help reinvigorate the movement and to prepare for upcoming
events
this year, starting with the a major conference on Nuclear
Nonproliferation at
the UN this May. Admission is free to all. Donations will be requested.

Lawrence S. Wittner is
an author
and Professor of History at State University of New York/Albany. A
former
president of the Council on Peace Research in History (now the Peace
History
Society), he has written extensively on the history of peace movements
and on
the history of United States foreign policy.
Professor Wittner's
books include
Rebels Against War (1969, rev. ed. 1984), Cold War America.
(1974,
rev. ed. 1978), and American Intervention in Greece (1982). His
most
extensive project was a scholarly trilogy entitled The Struggle
Against the
Bomb (1993-2003). In 2009, he came out with an abbreviated version:
Confronting the Bomb: A Short History of the World Nuclear
Disarmament
Movement (Stanford University Press).
Professor
Wittner has spoken at the United Nations and at the Norwegian Nobel
Institute,
delivered guest lectures on dozens of college and university campuses,
and given
talks in numerous countries. Lawrence Wittner has been a peace movement
activist
for nearly fifty years, and currently serves on the national board of
Peace
Action, America's largest peace organization.
