Licensing

A sound recording has at least two copyrights: the KOWA-lp for the musical composition and words, the second for the performance or interpretation of that.

Traditional radio licensing

ASCAP - about $280
BMI - about $280
SESAC - about $80

Internet streaming licensing

Stations streaming on the internet must pay fees to SoundExchange (see their licensing FAQ), the entity designated by Congress to collect these fees. In our situation, we are looking at $500 to stream our signal, in addition to the traditional radio licensing fees.

KOWA Organization

Mission
KOWA-LP's mission is to give voice to individuals, organizations and movements working for social justice, economic democracy, ecological sustainability and peace.

Ultimate authority
By law, Media Island International is the responsible party for the KOWA-LP license. Media Island International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation based in Olympia, Washington. The ultimate authority over KOWA-LP rests in the Media Island board.

KOWA-LP core group
The day-to-day decisions about KOWA-LP are made by the organizers at the 6:00 pm Monday meetings.

Programming
All programming is juried by the core group, guided by our mission statement. We give priority to locally-produced content. We also recognize the importance of continuity and listener habits, meaning we strive to guide the listener along smoothly, flowing well between program tone and content.
Once a show is accepted, it must be scheduled. This is a separate task, and should probably be handled by a scheduling working group with interest in the matter and knowledge of the KOWA-LP schedule. This does not imply an exclusive group, only that we should allow people the option of not having to do this potentially time-consuming work, which many will not want to do.
