Computer Security

This section is at the top because every activist should be especially concerned about computer security. These links will help keep you informed. While you are surfing the Internet, the Government and corporations will be spying on your Internet usage. Inform yourself about their tactics and implement strategies to protect your privacy. - secure email service offers secure email services to socially conscious individuals. - Communication Security
Why security matters: The increasing importance of information and communication has brought with it another phenomenon: the rise of a surveillance society. You can think of surveillance as an attempt by the powerful to maintain their dominance by asserting control over communication. Nation states have responded to new communications technology by pursuing an infrastructure that can easily be re-purposed for total social control. - Electronic Frontier Foundation
EFF is the leading civil liberties group defending your rights in the digital world. There is an amazing amount of computer security information here. Similar to how a software bug collection site helps keep your software secure, the EFF helps with the human side of things so that Congress and corporations are not undermining your Internet liberties. It is a constant struggle. Show them some love. After all, they are fighting for your online rights. The DEEPLINKS Blog is especially interesting. - Tor, the Onion Router
Like a VPN, but your traffic is bounced around the internet to many nodes to make it much more anonymous. A free software implementation of second-generation onion routing, a system enabling its users to communicate anonymously on the Internet. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. Using Tor protects you against a common form of Internet surveillance known as "traffic analysis." Traffic analysis can be used to infer who is talking to whom over a public network. Knowing the source and destination of your Internet traffic allows others to track your behavior and interests. This can impact your checkbook if, for example, an e-commerce site uses price discrimination based on your country or institution of origin. It can even threaten your job and physical safety by revealing who and where you are. For example, if you're travelling abroad and you connect to your employer's computers to check or send mail, you can inadvertently reveal your national origin and professional affiliation to anyone observing the network, even if the connection is encrypted. - GRC | Security Now! Episode Archive
Hosted by Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte, Security Now! is our weekly Internet security column and podcast. We take 30 to 90 minutes near the end of each week to discuss important issues of personal computer security. Sometimes we'll discuss something that just happened. Sometimes we'll talk about long-standing problems, concerns, or solutions. Either way, every week we endeavor to produce something interesting and important for every personal computer user. This show has embedded commercials for products, however, the content of this program is unmatched. Steve Gibson is one in a billion with his incredible knowledge of computer isues. GRC also has a plethora of information that you should read about keeping your computer secure. One of the most important things to know about is ARP CACHE POISONING. - SecurityFocus

It was born from a desire to create a UK wide radical radio network that collectively uses a single Internet platform for the streaming of live and pre-recorded radio content presenting points of view generally diverging from those of the more established, and mainstream, media. Given its political and techno-social foundations, Catalyst is designed to encourage and multiply independent, DIY (do-it-yourself) and DIT (do-it-together) media production, specifically radio, as well as connect and support radical radio makers and media enthusiasts. Moreover, it has been set up to be owned and operated by its community, namely those broadcasting on it, organising it, participating in it, and listening to it. As such it draws great inspiration from long term independent media projects such as Indymedia. You are your own comeuppance. You become your own message. You are the message. In the Spirit of Crazy Horse - Leonard Peltier"

Since its founding, it has grown into a nationally prominent publisher of educational materials, with subscribers in all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and many other countries. - WE ARE NOT YOUR SOLDIERS!
There is an epidemic sweeping through American high schools. Youth sign up for the military by the 1000’s, feeling some sort of obligation to serve their country. 9/11 often serves as a means and justification for this feeling. We don’t have any obligation to fight in wars that began when we could barely grasp the meaning of such an act using tactics so monstrous that millions of innocent people have died. The only obligation we have is to the future of humanity. As bombs rain down on civilian populations, children are literally tortured, and Nuremberg standards identify war crimes every single day: we cannot be silent. No matter how much they try to convince us these wars belong to us, we can’t cave in. The only war we should be fighting is one against the militarization of our generation. We should fight to keep the recruiters out of our schools and neighborhoods, away from our friends and family, and most importantly entirely out of new recruits. This fight can begin right now. You can initiate it. - Jubilee USA

Resource Sharing and Sustainable Living - Food Not Bombs
Food Not Bombs shares free vegan and vegetarian meals with the hungry in over 1,000 cities around the world to protest war, poverty and the destruction of the environment. With over a billion people going hungry each day how can we spend another dollar on war? Food Not Bombs is one of the fastest growing revolutionary movements and is gaining momentum throughout the world. There are hundreds of autonomous chapters sharing free vegetarian food with hungry people and protesting war and poverty. Food Not Bombs is not a charity. This energetic grassroots movement is active throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Food Not Bombs is organizing for peace and an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. For nearly 30 years the movement has worked to end hunger and has supported actions to stop the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, end exploitation and the destruction of the earth. - The Really Really Free Market
You have some stuff you don't need, everyone does. Share your extra items with your local community. It can be anything that you think someone else would want. In return, maybe you will find something that you need? That, however, is just scratching the surface. Really, Really Free Market can be whatever you make it. Because there is enough for everyone; Because sharing is more fufilling than owning; Because corporations would rather see landfills overflow than anyone get anything for free; Because scarcity is a myth constructed to keep us at the mercy of the economy; Because a sunny day outside is better than anything money can buy; Because "free trade" is a contradiction of terms; Because no one should have to do without food, shelter, entertainment, and community; Because life should be a picnic, but it only will be if we make it happen. - The Freecycle Network™
Changing the world one gift at a time. The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,965 groups with 8,584,043 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by local volunteers (them's good people). Membership is free. Olympia Freecycle - ReUseIt Network (RIN)
The ReUseIt Network is an on-line forum that serves as a tool to make connections between community members who want to help each other, themselves, and their environment. In a disposable society where many items are discarded long before they have actually outlived their use, The ReUseIt Network helps get things from people who have them but don't want them to people who want them but don't have them. Our goal is to find new uses for unwanted items that would otherwise be thrown into the trash. The primary benefit is that it reduces the amount of reusable items that end up in the trash with a secondary benefit of reducing the overall amount of items thrown into landfills. Reusing items not only cuts down on goods in landfills, but also helps reduce the strain on our natural resources by keeping useable items in circulation, reducing the need to manufacture additional goods. The ReUseIt Network also provides an opportunity for those looking for an item to ask for it. Requests for items may jog the memory of someone who has an unused item stashed in the garage or basement waiting to be used. It is a great way to help get rid of those things which we may have forgotten, giving every member the chance to ReUseIt! All transactions must be free, legal, and family-friendly. - Free Farm Stand
The Free Farm Stand, an all-volunteer run project of the No Penny Opera (a tax exempt organization) is about sharing the wealth of urban farms and gardens. We strive to attain the following goals: help make locally grown, fresh and nutritious organic produce accessible to all, especially those families and individuals on low-incomes and tight budgets; help empower people who have the space to grow their own food and become more self-reliant; promote good nutrition and health. What we do: We grow as much food as can in San Francisco and distribute it for free at our Free Farm Stand. We act as a gathering place in the Mission to encourage community growth and involvement. This effort revolves mostly around gathering surplus food from neighborhood gardens, various farmer's markets, community gardens, public and private fruit trees, and hosting a space where this bounty can be shared with all. We also work with Produce to the People who harvests organic fruit from backyard fruit trees and public spaces and brings it to our Free Farm Stand. - Full Circles
Full Circles is a Canadian group that is designed around the circle of life, going from undeveloped simple living to the full benefits of our technological society and back to a simpler way of life, with our society going full circle. Our Mission is to reduce our individual and collective environmental footprints on our home, the Earth by actively, energetically and positively promoting values of sustainability and conservation of resources. FULL CIRCLES will offer education, opportunity, and venues for individuals and communities to learn, to interact, to collaborate and to take action. - CouchSurfing

Miro also allows you to easily publish your media for easy access to all Miro users. Miro is one of the world's most popular free, open-source software projects. Dozens of major corporations are trying to lock video creators and viewers into closed and proprietary distribution systems. But if companies act as gatekeepers deciding what people see and what they don't, free speech online is threatened. Miro is recommended by Democracy Now!. - VLC Media Player
